I’m not going to lie, the last few weeks have been a doozy, on the heels of recovering from Noro, I learned of my grandmothers death, which occurred in the first days of Venus Retrograde - making the themes of reflecting on relationships of past very real to me. I am no stranger to grief, and my grandmother lived a very long, full life, but the portal it opens is so potent. Even though I did not have a super close relationship with her, I felt her departure on such a visceral level of my being, a karmic chapter closing, a rearranging of my root chakra. The beauty that exists right alongside deep sadness, the gratitude for life alongside the very real knowing it’s all just for a short time - it changes you. And so I am allowing myself to be changed, because I know that’s what our ancestors do for us, they begin the stories so we can finish them.
I’ve been calling the astrology of the month “March Madness” because most of the biggest shifts of the year occur in these 31 days. And this week, the Lunar Eclipse in Virgo - exact on March 14th 2:54am- kicks off the first of 4 eclipses that will occur in this sign until 2027.
What does this eclipse mean for you?
When the moon meets up with the south node, eclipses occur. This is a rather common experience, eclipses happen every 6 months, and switch signs every 1.5-2 years. This year we are making the shift from eclipses in Aries/Libra, to eclipses in Pisces/Virgo. The is a shift in the plot, inciting change and transformation in a new area of our charts. The last time we did major work in these areas was March 2015-Feb 2017 and before that March 2006-Feb 2008. It can be helpful to reflect on these years and if any major life changes were occurring for you.
To use my chart as an example: These eclipses are in my 6th house of work, daily life and routine and 12th house of inner life and past karma. In both cases, these years were times that I made major changes in my work life, when I shifted my career in fashion, and then again when I shifted my daily life and work completely due to being pregnant and having my daughter.
Today’s eclipse is on the south node- the point of release - so we can think of what we want to let go of in terms of both Virgo themes and the themes of the house Virgo is associated with in your birth chart.
Virgo Themes
Virgo is a mutable earth sign - which means it is BOTH flexible and adaptable, but also very practical, logical and grounded. Virgo puts emphasis on how we make the most of our day to day lives. Do we just want to get through the day? Or do we take time to enjoy ourselves? Do our habits serve our greater health and wellbeing? Or do the choices we make feel out of alignment with our higher purpose?
Shadow themes of Virgo include: (aka, What we are releasing)
Perfectionism - when we are stuck in this mode we never really get things done! We are too consumed with making it perfect that we never start that “messy first draft” or give ourselves to grace to suck at something until we learn the craft.
Controlling - Virgo loves a plan, a spreadsheet, a beautifully organized calendar. But as we all know, even the most well thought out plans often go awry (have you ever made a birth plan? LOL) - and it’s up to us in the moment to be able to go with the flow and adapt, take risks or actually be spontaneous!
Analysis Paralysis - Virgos are ruled by Mercury and as this eclipse is taking place, Mercury is in a standstill about to station retrograde in Aries! Virgo can often overthink and overanalyze everything.
Self doubt - Virgo has a tendency to see every possible angle of what could go wrong, and over time, it can create a lot of worry and self doubt.
Practices for this Eclipse:
In astrology, it’s a general rule that we do not manifest during eclipse season, but rather let this volatile energy be a catalyst for change while we sit back and allow nature to take it’s course.
A great way to work with this eclipse is to lean into the practices of its opposite sign that balances it out. While Virgo is earth and mundane, Pisces is water and spiritual.
go with the flow
meditation, yoga nidra, restorative yoga, unstructured movement
create - cook, paint, decorate - get your juices flowing with NO PLAN
positive affirmations - I’ve been listening to old school Louise Hayes & it’s so uplifting!
Mercury Retrograde: March 15th- April 7th
Just one day after the eclipse, Mercury, rule of Virgo, stations retrograde exact - March 15th 2:46am. This quality of time is super potent, with Mercury and Venus in retrograde together, emphasizing both how we feel and also how we think about our feelings, and how we communicate them.
Mercury deepens the plot that Venus has started - it wants us to really get to the bottom of these issues. This eclipse + retrograde season is giving us the opportunity to see patterns, habits and ways of relating that are ready to be reviewed, revised or fully released.
Mercury will be traversing the same area of our chart Venus is currently in - Aries and Pisces, doubling down on the themes of endings and new beginnings. I expect that things in our lives will look a lot different just one or two months from now! I do feel this is a time when we can really double down on the changes we want to make in our lives. If there is something you feel called to change, this is the time to take that leap of faith.
