This year the summer solstice falls in line with the Capricorn full moon, which also ushers us into Cancer season. It’s a time of illumination and clarity, but also deep release.
Capricorn is the “daddy” energy of the zodiac, the ambitious goat that can climb mountains, but also has a fish tail and came from the depth of the sea. Capricorn teaches us strong boundaries and responsibility while challenging us to understand our emotional and spiritual sides. How do we integrate our external ambitions with our inner passions and creative yearnings?
I’ve been exploring my relationship with the masculine a lot lately. Everything from enacting boundaries with my own father to exploring how the power dynamics that live within me. The father as the authoritative figure runs deep in our collective and in our ancestry. This full moon we can explore how we feel supported - whether it be our family, with partners, work, and even the universe. Some journal questions or explorations:
What areas of life do I struggle with lack, scarcity, or abandonment?
Where in life do I feel powerful?
Who or what holds power over me?
Is there anyone I feel afraid to confront or communicate with?
In my journal last week I wrote a letter to my father and was surprised that underneath a lot of hurt and anger, was a deep longing to be supported. Also present with that longing was a deep shame around that desire, feminism says we need to be strong and independent. But it doesn’t have to be either or, I can hold these two truths at once - a longing for that masculine support and the desire to support myself.
Even if we had an amazing, present, sober and emotionally available father, living in a patriarchal society where a small few hold so much more power than others creates an imbalance that is felt throughout the entire collective.
We can play this out with our close relationships, with a boss, landlord, money or whatever we perceive has power over us. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve felt afraid around a financial situation or to advocate for my own needs at work or negotiate a better deal with a purchase. Capricorn can help us build solid foundations so we can increase our capacity to hold more and feel more autonomy, especially around earthly themes of money, work, and career ambitions. It helps us understand the boundaries and structures we need to put in place and this full moon might help illuminate what stands in the way.
The full moon chart also shows a conjunction between the Sun, Venus and Mercury in Cancer and also a square with Neptune and Saturn! There is a lot of light around our relationships, how we communicate and the boundaries we need to set both with others and with our own fantasies. How can we put structure around our delusions so that they become actionable and productive? Not that all of our passions need to be productive but for this particular full moon it might be interesting to play with your imagination and if there is a fantasy you really want to make a reality. Or perhaps there are a few fantasies we are ready to release for something more realistic. Play around with this one - with Mercury nearby it might be nice to journal or write more.
The Solstice is a moment of illumination and a marker in time of the seasons. Six months ago the winter solstice was a moment of darkness, perhaps we were planting seeds or going on an inward journey. Now at the summer solstice, Father Sun is showing us something about our progress.
What is being illuminated now?
What feels more clear than it did 6 months ago?
What was I balancing in March during the Spring Equinox?
How does it feel now?
June has been a month of a lot of shifts and change for many of us. It might be a bit disorientating but it also might feel really clarifying. I hope the light of the solstice helps you to honor how far you have come and to celebrate it. I hope the release of this full moon in Capricorn helps you to shed what’s held you back from standing in your own power. I hope Venus and Mercury in Cancer give you new resources to listen to your body and make adjustments in regards to how you care for yourself. Remember it’s ok to make adjustments and to not always know what’s best for us - we just keep learning to listen and let that relationship shift and grow.
Full Moon and Solstice blessings to you!
